*Speaker Bios

Gabrielle Esperdy is an architectural historian and Associate Professor of Architecture at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Her work examines the intersection of architecture, consumerism, and modernism in the urban and suburban landscape, especially in the U.S. in the 20th and 21st centuries. She is particularly interested in minor or everyday buildings and with the ways that social, economic, and political issues shape the built environment. Her first book, Modernizing Main Street, was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2008. She is currently at work on a second book, Architecture’s American Road Trip, which examines how architectural discourse absorbed the ideals and concerns of commercial sphere after World War II. Prof. Esperdy is an Associate Editor of multi-volume series The Buildings of the United States, and the Editor of the SAH Archipedia, an online resource of the history of the built environment scheduled to go live in 2012. Her research has been supported by the Graham Foundation, the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation, and the American Council of Learned Societies. She was educated at Smith College and the City University of New York.

Jill Pearlman has been teaching in the Environmental Studies Program at Bowdoin College for 16 years. In 2007 she published Inventing American Modernism: Joseph Hudnut, Walter Gropius and the Bauhaus Legacy at Harvard published by the University of Virginia Press/Center for American Places. Currently she is writing a history of modernism and the culture of Hampstead, London from the 1930s to 2000. Her focus is on the unusual life of the Lawn Road Flats, the modernist building that housed the Gropiuses and Breuer during their exile in London in the 1930s. Prof. Pearlman has received grants from the Graham Foundation, the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, the Samuel Kress Foundation, and the Center for Advanced Studies in the Visual Arts. She received her Ph. D. from the University of Chicago, in 1993.

Kenneth Frampton is a British architect, critic, historian and the Ware Professor of Architecture at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation at Columbia University, New York. Frampton is well known for his writing on twentieth century architecture. His books include Modern Architecture: A Critical History and Studies in Tectonic Culture. Frampton achieved great prominence in architectural education with his essay "Towards a Critical Regionalism" (1983) Also, Frampton's essay was included in a book The Anti-Aesthetic. Essays on Postmodern Culture, though Frampton is critical of postmodernism.
